Union extends mask mandate through September 30
Union College is continuing to plan for a relatively normal school year. However, the alarming increase in COVID spread in many parts of the country—including here in Lincoln—and new recommendations from health experts, has prompted college leadership to make some adjustments at the start of the academic year.
Union will comply with the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department directed health measure by extending a mask mandate indoors through September 30. The college will reevaluate the situation at the end of the month to see if the mask mandate should continue.
Current exceptions still apply. Students, employees and visitors don’t have to wear a mask indoors in these situations:
- In their own residence hall room or alone in their office
- While eating at a table in Union Market
- While actively exercising or in the pool at Larson Lifestyle Center
- If vaccinated and participating on the court in a Warrior official practice or game
- If vaccinated and participating in certain indoor club or SA events while eating
Student or employees may request medical exemption from wearing a mask by filling out this form..
Union does not plan to alter activities—either academic, social, worship or athletic. College leadership believes the current precautions will allow Union to be able to do everything else as normal.
“Union College will continue to work with our local health department and follow CDC guidelines to make sure we keep our campus and community safe,” said Sauder. “Throughout the pandemic, we have quickly adjusted to meet the challenges brought on by COVID-19. We will continue to be ready to make changes as needed to protect the Union College family.”

These numbers represent those currently in isolation (confirmed case of COVID-19) or quarantine (close contact or symptoms that have not yet been confirmed as COVID).
Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself and ensure Union has a great school year. We're not requiring students to get vaccinated—but we strongly encourage everyone to get the COVID vaccine and ask you to report if you've been vaccinated. When we know how many have been vaccinated, we can make better decisions about what is needed to protect our campus.

What if I have symptoms?
If you have symptoms, you must stay in your room (or at home if you live off campus) and contact Virtual Care. The physician will determine if you need a COVID test and will tell you what to do next. You will then be contacted to follow up and explain quarantine or isolation procedures. You must stay in quarantine or isolation (if you test positive) until cleared by Campus Health.

Missing class because of being placed in quarantine or isolation will be counted as an excused absence, but you must contact your professors to let them know why you are missing class and arrange to make up coursework.
Employees, please stay home and contact their health care provider immediately to determine is you should be tested. You should also contact your supervisor.

What if I am exposed to someone with COVID?
If you have been vaccinated—you do not have to quarantine. Please self monitor and watch for symptoms for five days. If you develop symptoms, contact Virtual Care (and follow instructions above).
If you have not been vaccinated—you must quarantine immediately in your room (or at home) and contact Virtual Care to determine next steps. Employees should stay home and contact their health care provider and work supervisor.
