Frequently asked questions
How do I know if I am a transfer student?
If you are a high school graduate or have earned a General Education Degree (GED) and then attended a college or university, you are considered a transfer student.
Am I considered a transfer student if I previously attended Union College and would like to re-enroll?
Former, degree-seeking Union College students are not considered transfer students. If you are interested in returning to Union College and have not been a student at Union College for more than two consecutive semesters, please complete the traditional application process. If you have additional questions about this process, please contact the Enrollment office at 402.486.2504. If you are interested in returning after being gone for only one semester, please complete the re-enrollment form. You may contact the Records Office at 402.486.2529 if you have additional questions regarding re-enrollment.
When should I apply for admission?
Transfer admission is done on a rolling basis. This means that once your file is complete and we have received all required materials, your file will be reviewed and you will be notified. Applying for admission is the best way for you to get the admissions process started.
Where should I mail my transcript for evaluation?
Please send your official transcript from each college attended to Admissions Office, Union College, 3800 South 48th Street, Lincoln, NE 68506.
I am/was a member of the military. How do I get my transcript?
Please request your Joint Services transcript. This can be sent electronically via the JST website.
To see how military credit is applied, search for American Council on Education in our transfer credit equivalency tool.

How many credit hours can I transfer to Union College?
Union College does not set a limit on the number of transfer credits accepted; however, not all transferred credits may meet graduation requirements. In addition, Union College’s residency requirements may stipulate that you take additional courses at Union College. Please refer to the academic bulletin for complete details.
How does Union College determine which courses will transfer?
A student transferring from another regionally accredited college or university receives credit for course work elsewhere when the following conditions are met: an official transcript is received directly from the other institution and credits transferred have a grade of C- (1.67) or above.
How do I know if my school is regionally accredited?
Most schools post accreditation information on their website and on the back of their official transcripts. You can also search for your school on the U.S. Department of Education's website.
Recognized regional accrediting organizations include:
- Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) Western Association of Schools and Colleges
- Higher Learning Commission (HLC)
- Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE)
- New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC-CIHE) Commission on Institutions of Higher Education
- Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)
- WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC)
Will my cumulative GPA transfer with me?
Your Union College GPA will be calculated using transferred courses and courses taken at Union College.
I received notification from the Records Office about transfer work. How do I find out what transferred?
Credits that have been transferred can be viewed via your unofficial Union College transcript. Union College students may log into their Self-Service account, go to “Grades” tab, and click on unofficial transcript.
How do I find out what transfer credits will apply toward my degree?
When a transfer course is equivalent to a Union College course, the transfer course is given the Union College course prefix and number but the original title and credit hours are retained.
In the event a lower division transfer course is comparable to an upper division Union College course, lower division credit will be granted. In some cases, this course may apply to a degree requirement if requested by academic petition.
Once you begin classes at Union College, an academic plan will be created for you and will help guide you in remaining graduation requirements. You will be able to access this from the “Register” tab in Self-Service.
I have already completed a bachelor’s degree at another regionally accredited institution. Do I still have to complete general education at Union College?
No. However, some general education classes are required for specific degrees and those classes will be required. In addition, if the second degree requirements do not contain a religion course, students will be required to take one. Please see the academic bulletin for specifics.
There is one exception. Students who have already completed an international baccalaureate degree must still complete the general education requirements for Union College.
I am transferring from a non-Seventh-day Adventist institution. Will I need to take religion courses?
General Education Religion requirements for students transferring from institutions other than Seventh-day Adventist colleges are reduced to:
- Sophomores: 9 semester credits
- Juniors: 6 semester credits
- Seniors: 3 semester credits
Appeals: what if I feel a course should have transferred differently?
If you feel a course should have been transferred that was not, or you are concerned about how a course was transferred, please contact the Records Office at transfer@ucollege.edu.
One of my courses was transferred with XX in the course code. What does this mean?
When a transfer course is considered to not be equivalent to a Union College course but will count for elective credit, it is assigned a discipline prefix (when applicable) along with a 1XX or 3XX course number. The “1” indicates it is a lower division course and the “3” indicates it is an upper division course.
I am transferring from a quarter school. How do my credits transfer to the semester system?
Quarter credits convert to semester credits on a 2/3 conversion formula. For example, a 4 quarter credit class would transfer as 2.67 semester credits. For specific formula details, contact transfer@ucollege.edu or explore the chart below for the most common conversions.
Quarter credits earned | = | Semester credits awarded at Union College |
---|---|---|
1.0 | = | 0.67 |
2.0 | = | 1.33 |
3.0 | = | 2.00 |
4.0 | = | 2.67 |
5.0 | = | 3.33 |
6.0 | = | 4.00 |
I have taken CLEP and/or AP tests. Will these transfer?
For AP – if we receive official AP scores of 3 or higher, we generally grant credit. For more information, see AP Credit policy and search for CollegeBoard in our transfer credit equivalency tool.
For CLEP – CLEP credit is granted with stipulations. For complete details, view the academic bulletin section on College Level Examination Program (CLEP). To see how CLEP credit is applied, search for CollegeBoard in our transfer credit equivalency tool.
I am trying to register for classes, but it indicates I am missing the pre-requisite. I believe I took this course at my previous institution.
First, verify that your official transcripts have been received and evaluated by the Records Office. You can determine this by viewing your unofficial transcript on Self-Service.
Second, does the course pre-requisite require an ACT score? If so, have your scores been given to Union College?
If the course is on your transcript and your ACT scores are on file, but you still cannot register for the class, please contact the Records Office at 402.486.2529.
